Great weather for ducks.... but not for fish!

Where there are massive parts of the UK desperate for rain to ease the drought issues, I think it's only the water companies and ducks who are happy with this weeks weather.
To say it's been a bit wet, is an understatement.

I was out and about in Cardiff today and at some points, I would have been better off wearing a wet suit and flippers, than a business suit and shoes.

But as I sit here moaning about the weather, our brave fishermen have been out, doing their thing, to keep us in supply of some fabulous fresh fish.

"Jessica Lynn - Day Boat"

The "Jessica Lynn" and her sea hardy skipper Tom Russell of Poole, have had a trying couple of days. Landings have proved difficult due to strong currents and high winds.
Nonetheless, Tom has managed to land a small, yet perfect selection of fish!

Dover Sole, Brill, Ray Wings and Sea Bass

Available from Thursday morning, so call your local branch for the best prices!

----------

"South Coast - Brixham/Plymouth"

It's not been an easy week so far for the South Coast fishermen either. Despite the challenging weather conditions, a number of brave Brixham vessels have managed to land great fish you can enjoy.

However, the quantities are small, so call your local branch before they're all gone.

Plaice, Lemon Sole, Monkfish, Brill, Grey Mullet and Sea Bass

----------

"William Sampson", "James RH" and "Admiral Grenville"
Newlyn

You can see a theme here guys, right? A number of challenging days on the high seas for the fishermen of Newlyn too.  The skippers and crews of the above vessels have braved the elements, to bring us a range of outstanding South Coast beauties.

Catch of the day....

Catch of the Day!!

The weather has really been against fishermen this last few days, with high winds and heavy rain but we still have some fantastic fish available for you to order throughout the night on our answer machine service for delivery tomorrow (Saturday) and Monday.

-----------

Dover Sole, Brill, Ray Wings, Black Bream and Sea Bass
"Jessica Lynn"

The "Jessica Lynn" and her crew have had a challenging couple of days due to high winds. It looks like their grit and determination have proved worthy as they landed us another outstanding range of South Coast species.

---------------

Diver-caught Scallops
Brixham

We source these fantastic hand-dived Scallops directly from the diver who catches them around 2 miles off the coast of Brixham. He places his catch in his own filter tanks which ensures the Scallops stay as fresh and succulent as possible.

---------------

Plaice, Lemon Sole, Cod, Pollack, John Dory, Brill, Turbot, Monkfish and Ray Wings
Brixham/Plymouth

Despite the challenging fishing conditions the brave crews of Brixham and Plymouth landed a great selection of South Coast fish. We are proud to bring you the results of their hard work and dedication.

---------------

Brill, Hake, Lemon Sole, Monkfish, Red Mullet and Megrim
"Cornishman", "Trevessa", "William Sampson"

The poor weather has affected landings in Newlyn too however, the vessels managed to land a small yet fabulous array of species.

Call your local branch today/tonight and place your orders for this beautiful fresh fish/seafood, which will be in branch tonight ready for delivery tomorrow and Monday.

Sustainability and why!

There are many important things to us ate M&J Seafood. Great quality fish/seafood and a great service are two very important parts of our business but there is one vital part of our business that is just as important.....  Sustainability!

This topic is very important to myself, M&J Seafood and to many of our customers.

Why? There is no easy solution. Our challenge - fishermen to markets to suppliers to chefs to consumers – is to make the best informed decisions each and every day. These choices have no definitive ‘right or wrong’ guidelines, but at M&J Seafood they underline our approach to business and our commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainability, ensuring we meet today’s needs while protecting tomorrow’s.

We are proud suppliers to Mr Raymond Blanc's restaurants across the UK and in his very own words ;

“Every good chef wants to be responsible about his sourcing of ingredients, from the point of view of sustainability as well as that of quality. I’m delighted that M&J Seafood take their responsibility of our fish stocks so seriously”

I think Mr Blanc has got it spot on! We need to look after tomorrow.... its our future, our kids and their kids futures and sourcing sustainable produce is one way we can protect these futures. Not just me, M&J Seafood or chef's, but you, yes you!

Recently, I had a request for smoked eel and conga eel. Unfortunately, these species have now become endangered and are no longer sustainable. So, as part of our (M&J Seafood) commitment to sustainability, we have removed these items from our product list. This is great evidence that we take sustainability seriously. We could get these products.... but we won't! A very important and  brave stance, I think, but one I totally agree with.

So you can also be safe in the knowledge, that all of our products are sustainable as M&J Seafood are 100% committed to sustainability .

Check out a list of some of our sustainable favourites .

Thank you again for reading my post and hope that you have enjoyed it or/and taken some knowledge from it. For more on M&J Seafood and sustainability, check out our website  www.mjseafood.com or contact me direct.

Thanks again

Simon

What a story!!

Morning all,

This morning I received some great information about how our Chesil Beach (Portland) Mackerel is being caught and wanted to share this with you guys.

I will blog about the full story at a later date when I can get more information, but this will give you a great idea on what work is being done by some of our suppliers/fishermen.

It is all done by hand, using nothing but two rowing boats and a net. They litterally go 100 yards off the beach, throw their nets over and bring the catch in. This family have been doing this isnce the end of World War Two and are still going strong.

Talking about reducing Carbon Footprint. The only transposrt used is for us to pick it up and dispatch it to our lovely customers. Great sustainable fish, being sold by us (M&J Seafood) right now.
